Sigh......
So many things to write...so many children to educate...so many idiot contractors to deal with...where do I start?
The last Saturday in January we received a letter from ING Direct, a bank with whom we held a Home equity line of credit loan, stating that since our home was now classified as being in a flood plain, we were now required to show proof of flood insurance or else we would be assigned a policy at an outrageous price. Well, I was pretty ticked, since I was planning on using ~$30,000 of that at 5.5% interest to fund the furnishings and the finished construction of our 1208 sq. ft. addition (bringing our per person square footage from ~199 to 309....still way below the national average, but very adequate for us). Thanks federal government. You go ahead and bail out all the people who build homes on the ocean and then require flood insurance for the tiny creek in our yard that is only flooding because the overpass on Terry Rd. is too low....You create the flood plain; then you stick us with the bill...while all the time you continue to feed, educate and home illegal aliens. Thanks for restoring my faith in the federal government. No wonder I can't wait for the 2008 Presidential election. (Why aren't there rolling eye emoticons on this blog?)
Anyway, I was pretty ticked and went to Dan for advice. He had the great idea (no sarcasm here) for cashing in various and sundry tax saving vehicles we've invested in and paying cash! I am so excited. We will own a ~$300,000 home free and clear and still have over 6 figures privately saved for retirement and have NO lien on our home (except for the one that the county can put on your home when you don't pay your taxes...this past year 72% of our property tax went for direct wealth transfers from producers to consumers....). So, I called ING and canceled the home equity line of credit.
BUT, to get this done before my 7th daughter arrives in 5 weeks will require an act of God, because noone really seems to interested in moving quickly. How do you motivate idiots? These people are all SO slow and despite my urging them to move along quickly and then empty promises to do so...things drag along so slowly I can scarcely take it. I'd write all the details, but it would bore me to do so...how much more so you to read it.
In 2006 when we had our kitchen redone by Lowe's and we were having problems with the installers I was lamenting to Norm, the sales install manager, who I liked at first, but by the time 2 more months went by, we were both grateful to never have to see or talk with each other again...lol....said to me, "Lisa, you have to remember...contractors are the people who didn't sit at the front of the class." At the time, I thought he was being patronizing; I now realize he was correct....So...Norm if you're reading his (lol), you were right. I just might even look you up next time I'm at Lowe's to tell you so.
